The number one cause of lost gemstones is worn or broken prongs or tips.
One of the saddest things we see as jewelers on a regular basis, is when a customer comes in to find out how much it will cost to replace a diamond or gemstone that has fallen out of their ring and has been lost, because of a worn, damaged, or bent prong. This should never happen and can be prevented with a free regular inspection by any of our trained jewelry staff!
The prongs that are designed to securely hold your diamonds or gemstones in place wear out over time, or they can be bent if the ring accidentally gets struck against a hard object. When prongs get worn or damaged it's very easy to loose a gemstone.
Get in the habit of letting your jeweler inspect your rings at least every four months ... it's free.
Worn prongs should be re-tipped and repaired before
they break and need to be replaced. Prong re-tipping is also substantially less expensive than replacing the entire head, or prong component, which usually has to be done after
prongs have been worn down too far.
